OpenAI Releases GPT-6.1 Terra: Cheaper Model for Computer Tasks

OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a faster and cheaper model designed mainly for tasks on your computer.

GPT-6.1 Terra was released by OpenAI on Monday 26 October 2026 as a cheaper model in the GPT-6 family. The model is mainly designed for tasks on your computer, also known as computer use. Sam Altman announced its arrival that day on X.

What exactly is new?

On 26 October 2026, OpenAI published a post titled Introducing GPT-6.1 Terra. The post is in the Product category and appears in OpenAI’s news list. The exact URL of that post has not been confirmed. That is why we are linking to OpenAI’s news page.

According to Benzinga, Sam Altman wrote on X that 6.1 Terra is here. He also said that OpenAI is especially excited about a new era of computer use. That means Terra focuses on tasks on a computer.

Terra is positioned as a cheaper alternative within the GPT-6 family. According to reports, the model is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers, via ChatGPT Work and Codex.

For developers, reports mention an API price starting at $1 per million input tokens. For requests above 272,000 input tokens, the full request costs more. OpenAI advises developers to first test Terra on existing tasks before moving applications over.

What does this mean for you?

For people at work, GPT-6.1 Terra may be especially useful for repetitive computer tasks. Think of moving data between programmes or filling in forms. These are tasks where AI may help, as long as you keep checking the result carefully.

For freelancers and small and medium-sized businesses, a cheaper model can lower the barrier to entry. If you often carry out the same admin steps, it may be worth testing whether Terra can do part of that work.

Start small. Choose a task you can check properly. Do not let AI work unsupervised with customer data, payments or email. You remain responsible for what happens and for the outcome.

If you work with the API, the advice is clear: test Terra on existing tasks first. That matches the advice OpenAI itself is said to give. So do not move a whole application over straight away, but first see whether the model works well enough for your situation.

When can you use it in the Netherlands?

Whether GPT-6.1 Terra is specifically available in the Netherlands or Belgium has not been confirmed in the sources. It is also not confirmed what a subscription costs in the Netherlands or Belgium. That is why there are no euro prices to mention.

According to reports, Terra is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers, via ChatGPT Work and Codex. If you want to know whether you can already use it, check the model selection in your own ChatGPT. If you do not see Terra there, the sources do not make clear when that will change.
